Washington DC: von ammon co is pleased to announce the opening of NATURE CULT: TREMOR, a two-person exhibition by Donald Moffett and Shaun Krupa. Both artists recently exhibited together for the first time at VAC in FOCUS GROUP 4, and this marks their first-ever collaboration and first major project in the gallery. NATURE CULT: TREMOR is the twenty-sixth project at the gallery's Georgetown location.
Though superficially different, the practices of Moffett and Krupa mingle in their mutual examination of the apparatuses of creation and destruction on planet Earth. Engines of ruin and genesis find form in paintings—human limbs that emerge from fertile soil like reanimated cadavers; the lyrical, unblemished anatomy of malignant microbes; the intrepid rhythm of heavy drilling implements; the fearful symmetry of human gray matter (or, in this case, sludge brown matter) and devotional sculptures; an assemblage of dead tree limbs painted gold and bolted together to form an undead yet ethereal totem to life; a geometric amalgam that cites ancient spiritual sites across the globe. Meant to be apprehended as a unified ritualistic ground, NATURE CULT: TREMOR seeks to direct the senses towards the imperceptible: the seismic pulsations of fossil fuel extraction; the squirm of a virus breaking free of a human cell; the crackle of human neurons forming new inventions that portend greater ecological catastrophe.
